An embroidery file is not an image. It is a list of needle coordinates and machine commands, which is why a PES or DST file shows up as a blank icon on your computer and refuses to open in anything. Most people find out what a design actually does by hooping fabric and running it — an expensive way to discover that the machine stops four times or drags thread across the middle of a logo.

What the animation shows you that a preview picture cannot
- Stitch order. Which colour goes down first, and whether later blocks cover earlier ones the way you expected.
- Jumps. The machine travelling with the thread still attached, leaving a strand lying across the design. Every one is a strand you cover with later stitching or snip by hand.
- Trims. Where the thread is actually cut, so nothing spans the gap.
- Stops. The machine pausing and waiting for you — easy to miss until it happens mid-run.
- The numbers. Total stitch count, finished size in millimetres, and how many colours the design really uses.

DST and EXP record stitches and colour-change commands but no thread list at all — on a real machine the operator decides the colours. For those two the simulator shows placeholder colours, which still lets you see where one block ends and the next begins.
Formats outside that list are refused rather than guessed at. Most embroidery formats begin with arbitrary binary and have no header to identify them, so a reader pointed at the wrong format does not fail — it quietly turns noise into stitches that look plausible. A clear "we can't read this" is more useful than a convincing fake.
Your file stays on your computer
There is no upload button here because there is no upload. The simulator is JavaScript that reads the bytes off your disk and draws them on a canvas; the file never travels to click-stitch or anywhere else, nothing is stored, and nothing is logged. You can open designs you have no rights to redistribute, customer files under NDA, or a purchase you are simply curious about, without any of it leaving the machine you are sitting at.

Why are the colours wrong on my DST file?
DST and EXP files do not store thread colours at all — they record only stitches and colour-change commands, and the operator sets the actual threads at the machine. The simulator shows placeholder colours for those formats so you can still tell the colour blocks apart. PES, JEF, VP3 and XXX do carry a thread list, and those display their real colours.
