Line Art Embroidery

Sketches, outlines and simple logos don't need to be filled with thread. Traced as a single continuous running-stitch line, they stitch in a fraction of the time — and often look better.

Not every embroidery design should be solid. A line drawing rendered as filled satin and fill areas turns heavy and stiff, loses the lightness that made the drawing work, and takes tens of thousands of stitches to sew. The same drawing traced as a single continuous running stitch keeps its character, uses one thread color, and finishes in a fraction of the time.

That's what click-stitch's outline mode does: it reduces your artwork to its lines, routes those lines into as few continuous paths as possible, and exports a machine file that sews them as run stitch.

What single-line embroidery is good for

  • Sketches and hand-drawn illustrations — the stitched line reads like the pen stroke it came from.
  • Redwork and vintage-style motifs, which were always outline work to begin with.
  • Coloring-book style artwork and simple line logos.
  • Large designs on light fabric, where a filled version would be too heavy or would pucker.
  • Quick production runs — a line design can be an order of magnitude fewer stitches than the filled equivalent.

What it isn't good for: anything whose meaning depends on solid color blocks. A logo built from filled shapes should go through the normal image-to-embroidery workflow instead.

How to convert a drawing into line art embroidery

  1. Upload your drawing. A clean black-on-white line drawing gives the best result. Scans work; so do digital sketches exported as PNG.
  2. Choose "Outline it (single-line drawing)" as the image type in the guided Wizard.
  3. Review the trace. A preview shows the traced lines with a count of how many separate lines were found — a good sign is a small number.
  4. Tune the detail level. Five levels control how much of the drawing survives, from bold main contours to fine interior detail.
  5. Pick a line weight. Single, Double, Bold or Heavy, updated live with a sample swatch and stitch-count estimate.
  6. Size it and export. Add text or a border if you want, then download PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3 or XXX.

Centerline vs. outline tracing

This is the distinction that makes or breaks a line art conversion. Imagine a drawing made with a thick marker. A naive tracer follows the edges of that marker stroke — giving you two parallel stitched lines with a gap between them, like a hollow tube. That's almost never what you want.

Outline mode detects that your artwork is line art and takes the centerline instead: the stroke is thinned to its skeleton, so a thick pen stroke stitches once, down the middle, exactly as it was drawn.

Solid silhouettes are handled differently on purpose. A filled shape has no interior lines to skeletonise, so it takes the edge-detection path and gets its outline traced — which is the correct answer for a ring, a circle, or a filled logo you want outlined.

Practical tip: if your source is a solid black silhouette but you wanted the interior lines, redraw or export it as an actual line drawing. The tracer can only stitch lines that exist in the artwork.

Detail level and line weight

Detail level (1–5) changes the trace itself — smoothing, edge sensitivity, minimum line length and path simplification all move together. Level 1 gives you the confident main contours only; level 5 pulls in fine interior detail and will find considerably more lines. Changing it re-traces the artwork.

Line weight is a separate, downstream control and never re-traces. It's implemented as bean stitch: the machine backtracks each stitch so multiple threads lie along the same path.

Bean stitch was chosen over drawing a second parallel line for a practical reason: at a small offset two parallel rows fight for the same needle holes, and at a large offset they read as two thin lines rather than one thick one. Piling thread on the same centerline gives a genuinely bolder single line.

Fewer trims: how the routing works

A naive tracer produces one stitch path per connected fragment of line — and edge detection fragments lines constantly, dropping out for a few pixels wherever contrast dips. The result is a design with dozens of thread cuts in it, most of them across gaps of a millimetre.

Two things prevent that here. First, fragments whose ends fall within about 2mm of the finished design size are bridged back into one line — measured against the real output size, so the behaviour doesn't change when you scale the design. Second, the connected result is routed as a continuous trail that covers every line, retracing where necessary rather than cutting.

Cuts are then only made where they're genuinely required: to reach a shape that isn't connected to anything else. In practice a clean line drawing often stitches as one unbroken trail with zero trims, and even a busy traced photo comes out with a handful rather than dozens.

Why photos are hit and miss

We're upfront about this in the tool itself: outline mode is built for line drawings, and photos rarely come out well. The reason is structural. In a drawing, the lines are already there — the tracer just has to find them. In a photo, there are no lines, only contrast, and every soft ramp of shading is a candidate edge. Painted illustrations, airbrushed art, skin, hair and fabric texture are the usual failure cases, tracing as scribble rather than contour.

Photo tracing has been improved considerably — smooth regions are flattened before edge detection so gentle shading ramps stop registering as edges, and faint traced components are dropped by measuring the actual contrast underneath them — but it remains a different proposition from tracing a drawing. If your source is a photo, the standard fill-based workflow will usually serve you better.

Frequently asked questions

How many colors does a line art design use?

One, by default — the whole trace is a single thread. You can recolor sections afterwards if you want a two-tone effect.

Will it work with a scanned pencil sketch?

Usually, if the scan has decent contrast. Darken the lines and clean up the paper background first; a grey, low-contrast scan gives a broken trace.

Can I add a border around a line drawing?

Yes. Satin borders and patch borders build off the traced design's silhouette, so they follow the artwork rather than boxing it in. See the patch guide.
