Pixel art has a property no photo has: it is already quantised. A finite grid, a handful of flat colors, hard edges, no gradients. That is the exact structure a cross stitch pattern has — which means converting one into the other isn't an approximation, it's a direct translation.

Why pixel art is the ideal embroidery source
Normal digitizing has to make hard decisions: where does this gradient stop being one color? Is this soft edge a real boundary or JPEG noise? How small a shape is too small to stitch? Every one of those decisions is a chance to get it wrong, which is why photos are the hardest thing to digitize well.
A sprite has none of that ambiguity. Each cell is one flat color, every boundary is exact, and the color count is usually tiny — often 3 to 8 for classic 8-bit and 16-bit art. The extraction is exact rather than estimated, which is why the cross stitch workflow skips the color-picking, detail-check and merge steps entirely: there's nothing to guess at.
How to convert pixel art to cross stitch
- Upload your sprite. PNG is ideal, and a transparent background is handled cleanly — empty cells simply aren't stitched.
- Choose "Pixel art / sprite" as the image type in the guided Wizard. That switches the pipeline from shape tracing to grid extraction.
- Confirm the detected grid. The Wizard shows the grid it found — columns, rows, and the color palette — with a live preview.
- Set your size. Either dial in the size per pixel in millimetres, or type the finished overall width and let the cross size derive from it. The two are linked, so the design always comes out as a whole number of crosses.
- Add extras if you want them. Lettering, a satin patch border, or a recolor of any thread all work on top of the cross stitch layer.
- Export. PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3 or XXX — whichever your machine reads.
Grid detection: upscaled art works too
Most pixel art on the internet isn't at native resolution. It's been scaled up 4× or 8× for display, saved as a JPEG somewhere along the way, and has soft edges as a result. Feeding that to a normal tracer produces a mess of tiny fringe shapes around every pixel boundary.
Cross stitch mode looks for the underlying grid instead of the visible pixels: it finds where color boundaries actually fall, checks which candidate cell size puts those boundaries in phase across the whole image, and picks the coarsest grid that fits. So a 16×16 sprite blown up to 512×512 and JPEG'd still reads as 16×16, and each logical pixel becomes one cross — not sixty-four.
Cross size, fabric count, and finished dimensions
Hand cross stitchers size work in count — stitches per inch of fabric. Machine cross stitch is sized the same way, just expressed in millimetres per cross:

Finished size is simply cross size × grid dimensions, so a 32×32 sprite at 2.5mm comes out 80mm square (about 3.1 inches). The relationship runs both ways in the Wizard: type the width you want and the cross size follows, clamped so it never lands on a fractional stitch.
Grids too fine to fit a 305mm hoop even at the minimum cross size are rejected up front rather than producing an unstitchable file — if that happens, downsample your artwork to a coarser grid first.
Why the sewout has so few trims
The obvious way to stitch a grid of X's is one X at a time, with a jump between each — which would give a design with hundreds of trims and a sewout that spends more time cutting thread than stitching.
Instead, each cross is treated as two diagonal lines whose endpoints are shared corners, and the whole color layer is routed as one continuous path wherever the pixels connect — including diagonally, so corner-touching pixels of the same color sew straight through without a jump. Where the path can't be perfectly continuous, it retraces over stitches already laid rather than cutting; because every segment stays diagonal, the retrace is invisible in the finished piece.
The practical result: a solid shape in one color typically sews as one continuous path with zero internal trims. Separate blobs of the same color still get a proper cut between them — see the format guide for how jumps and trims differ between PES and DST.
Tips for a clean result
- Use the smallest honest version of your artwork. If you have the native-resolution sprite, use it. Detection handles upscales well, but native is always exact.
- Avoid anti-aliased pixel art. Soft-edged "pixel-ish" art with blended pixels produces extra palette colors. Posterize it or export with nearest-neighbour scaling first.
- Mind the color count. Every color is a thread change. Free accounts allow up to 3; classic sprites usually fit comfortably.
- Stabilize properly. A dense field of crosses pulls fabric in both directions — use a cut-away stabilizer, especially on knits.
- Do a small test first. Stitch a corner of the design at your chosen cross size before committing to the full piece.
Frequently asked questions
Can an embroidery machine do cross stitch?
Yes — a cross stitch is just two diagonals forming an X, well within what any home or commercial machine sews. The difference from hand cross stitch is that there's no aida fabric grid involved; the stitch positions come from the file.
Is this the same as a cross stitch pattern PDF?
No. A pattern chart tells a person where to put each stitch by hand. This produces a machine file — PES, DST, JEF — that your embroidery machine sews on its own.
Can I add text or a border to a pixel art design?
Yes. Lettering, satin borders and patch borders all work on top of the cross stitch layer, and the border traces the pixel silhouette rather than a bounding box. See the patch guide for border sizing.
What about photos — can they be cross stitched?
Technically, but the result rarely justifies it: a photo reduced to a coarse grid loses the detail that made it a photo. Pixel art works because it was designed at that resolution. For photos, use the standard fill-stitch workflow described in the image-to-embroidery guide.
