Does converting an embroidery file change the design?

No. The converter reads the stitches, jumps, trims and colour changes out of your file and writes the same ones back in the new format. The size and the stitch count are unchanged. The only things that can differ are what the target format cannot store — DST and EXP hold no thread colours, and a format with a shorter maximum stitch length will split the few stitches that exceed it.

Is this the same as digitizing?

No, and that distinction matters. Digitizing turns a picture into stitches, and a good one is a design decision. This tool never touches the stitches — it only rewrites the container. If you have an image rather than an embroidery file, use the image converter instead.

Will I lose my thread colours?

Only if you convert to DST or EXP, which have no thread list in the file at all — the colour changes survive, so the machine still stops in the same places, but the operator picks the actual threads. PES, JEF, SEW, VP3 and XXX all store colours, and they are carried across.

What changes, and what does not

Nothing about the stitching changes. EXP and PES are two ways of writing down the same thing — a list of needle positions with commands between them — so the conversion rewrites the list, not the design. Your PES file will report the same physical size and essentially the same stitch count as the EXP you started with.

Going the other way, PES can store thread colours but EXP never had any to give it. The colour changes are preserved, so the stops are all in the right places, and the converted file gets placeholder colours you can change on the machine or in your editing software.

One difference you will see in the numbers above: PES turns most jumps into trims. A jump moves the needle with the thread still attached; PES encodes all but the first as a cut-and-move, so a EXP file with nine jumps becomes a PES file with eight trims. That is the format's own convention, not damage — the machine sews the same path, it just snips between blocks instead of trailing thread. It means a little more trimming on the back and, on some machines, a few extra seconds per colour block.

Which machines read PES?
